Anthony Albanese was raised by a single mother in public housing and was a Labor Left student in the 1980s. He was not a Communist Party activist in a hammer-and-sickle shirt. Pauline Hanson did work hard as a mother and small-business owner. She was married for most of that decade, and she was not a public campaigner for “Australian culture” until the mid-1990s. The portraits are not them. The last line is an opinion, not a fact.

The claim in the wild

A graphic circulated on Facebook in a Pauline Hanson support group. Two studio portraits sit under the heading “In The 80s.” The man wears a red T-shirt with a hammer and sickle. The woman wears a teal blouse. The caption says:

Albo was a hard-left, socialist university student who was raised by a single mother on welfare. Pauline was a hardworking single mother who was passionate about preserving Australian culture and protecting our way of life. We are now paying the price for allowing one to take power while ignoring the warnings of the other.

The graphic as circulated on Facebook, 24 Oct 2026. The portraits are not published photographs of Albanese or Hanson. Image: Facebook screenshot, used to identify the claim.

The faces do not match known photographs of either person. Treat the graphic as a slogan card, not a family album.

What is true about Albanese

He says it himself. On his official site: his mother, Maryanne, raised him as a single parent in council housing in Sydney’s inner west. The Associated Press reported the same: a son of a single mother, raised on a pension in government housing in Camperdown. Parliamentary and biographical records add that Maryanne lived with chronic rheumatoid arthritis; the household relied on her disability pension and his grandmother’s age pension. “Welfare” is a sneer. The facts underneath it are not invented.

He was a university student in the 1980s. He took a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney, worked while studying, sat on the Students’ Representative Council, and joined Labor in 1979 at 15. The Parliamentary Library biography lists him as NSW Young Labor president from 1985 to 1987. That is the Labor Left, not a secret.

What the hammer and sickle is doing

“Hard-left socialist” is a faction label with a real history, then a costume. Inside NSW Labor, Albanese aligned with the “Hard Left,” a minority of the broader Left. Andrew Leigh, writing as a political scientist, noted that group’s links to other left organisations of the era, including the Communist Party of Australia. Links are not membership. AAP FactCheck has already knocked down the stronger version of this rumour — that Albanese was president of the University of Sydney Communist Party. He was president of the campus ALP Club. His biographer Karen Middleton records that Young Labor’s left fought the Liberals and the Communists. A 1984 Honi Soit listing, cited by AAP, names him as ALP Club president. A government spokesperson confirmed the same.

Student Albanese occupied an economics common room to defend a political-economy course. That is left campus politics. It is not a hammer-and-sickle portrait sitting. We have found no authentic 1980s photograph of him in that shirt. The ABC has published the real 1983 clock-tower stills. They do not look like this card.

Comments under the post pile on. One says he “never worked a day in his life — in a real job.” The parliamentary biography lists a bank officer (1980–81), then research officer to Labor minister Tom Uren (1985–89), then a party official, then senior adviser to NSW premier Bob Carr (1995–96). You can dislike those jobs. They are jobs. Another comment reads the fake portrait as a “gay bar loiterer.” That is a smear of a face that is not his.

What is true, and timed wrong, about Hanson

Pauline Hanson worked. She left school at 15, had children young, helped run a family fish shop, then the office of a roof-plumbing business with her second husband, Mark Hanson, after they married in 1980. They divorced in 1987 and the company was liquidated. She later bought a fish-and-chip shop in Silkstone, Ipswich, with partner Morrie Marsden, and ran it until she entered federal parliament. ABC Q&A’s biography and contemporary reporting describe long hours and four children. “Hardworking” is fair.

“Single mother” is only half a decade. For most of the 1980s she was married. The single-mum-behind-the-counter story that made her famous is the mid-1990s, when she was already in her forties.

The culture line is the bigger stretch. Hanson was not a public figure in the 1980s warning Australia about its way of life. She was elected to Ipswich City Council in 1994. She won Oxley in 1996 after the Liberal Party disendorsed her. That is when “equality for all Australians,” immigration, and Indigenous policy became her national platform. The Conversation and the ABC’s Hanson timeline put the political birth in that window, not “in the 80s.” You can like or dislike those later arguments. You cannot back-date them onto a 1984 shop counter and call it a warning ignored for forty years.

The last sentence is not a fact

“We are now paying the price” is a verdict on a government. It is not evidence. It does not become true because two childhoods are real. Plenty of Australians were raised by a single parent on a pension and never joined the Hard Left. Plenty of small-business mothers never ran for Oxley. The meme glues a true hardship story to a fake communist costume, then glues a true work story to a 1996 platform, then asks you to treat the result as destiny.

How to read the next one

Ask whether the faces are the people named. If you cannot find the same photo in a news archive or a campaign still, assume stock or a generated portrait.

Split the caption. “Raised by a single mother in public housing” can be true while “communist student” is false.

Check the year. A 1996 maiden speech is not an 1980s warning.

Treat “we are paying the price” as opinion unless it names a checkable event.

Same rules, every side

Labor people share the mirror image: Hanson as an eternal 1980s bigot, Albanese as a pure working-class saint. Both edits drop the calendar. The method is the same. Keep the dates. Keep the photos honest. Leave the score-settling out of the caption.

Evidence

Piece

Status

Why

The two portraits are Albanese and Hanson in the 1980s

False

They do not match published photographs of either person

Albanese was raised by a single mother in public housing, on pensions

True

His site; AP; parliamentary and biographical record

He was a Labor Left / “Hard Left” student and Young Labor official

True

APH: NSW Young Labor president 1985–87; campus ALP Club

He was a communist / hammer-and-sickle socialist

False

AAP FactCheck; ALP Club, not Communist Party; no authentic shirt photo

He never worked a real job

False

APH: bank officer; staffer to Uren; NSW Labor official; adviser to Carr

Hanson worked hard as a mother and small-business owner

True

Plumbing office, then Ipswich fish shop; ABC / contemporary bios

She was a single mother “in the 80s”

Partly true

Married 1980–87; the single-mum public story is mid-1990s

She was already campaigning to “preserve Australian culture” in the 1980s

False

Council 1994; Oxley 1996 is the national debut

Australia is “paying the price” for one and not the other

Opinion

Not a checkable claim

Sources

Claim graphic: Facebook post in a Pauline Hanson support group, captured 24 Oct 2026.
