The man who gave only the name “Tommy” at Abdul El-Sayed’s 17 October town hall is Thomas Teepell, a former Senate aide to Josh Hawley and later a Republican campaign political director. That is on the staff record. Calling him a paid “plant” sent to Caro is a leap. His father’s firm was paid to oppose El-Sayed. No filing shows the son was paid for that night.

The claim in the wild

A Reich Wing Watch Facebook post circulated a still with the line that a heckler who presented as a random concerned citizen named “Tommy,” in a viral clip with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, has been confirmed as a Republican operative. The caption says he asked a dual-loyalty question about the Muslim Brotherhood, that El-Sayed turned it back on the Constitution, and that congressional staff records show Thomas Teepell joined Hawley’s office as an intern and later became operations director, then political director for a Kansas governor campaign. It treats the night as a planted gotcha.

The Facebook graphic as circulated, 24 Oct 2026. Image: Facebook screenshot, used to identify the claim.

What the video shows

The town hall was 17 October 2026 in Caro, Michigan. A man who gave the name Tommy asked El-Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed said yes at once: “Sure, yeah, absolutely.” He then asked what the question implied. CBS Detroit reports Tommy said the Brotherhood is “a terrorist group” and that he had not heard El-Sayed reject it. El-Sayed said the question assumed dual loyalty because he is Muslim, compared it with questions once put to John F. Kennedy about the pope, and said he was running for the Senate and happened to be Muslim.

He asked Tommy to disavow any attempt to read religious doctrine into U.S. law. Tommy said he would not. El-Sayed said it was Tommy who needed to understand the Constitution. The crowd cheered. Tommy left. That sequence matches the Facebook write-up.

Who Tommy is

The Handbasket first named him as Thomas Teepell, living in Detroit. The Guardian, citing congressional staff records on LegiStorm, reports he joined Hawley’s Senate office as an intern in 2023, rose to operations director, and left in February 2026. He then became political director for Philip Sarnecki’s Kansas gubernatorial campaign. Sarnecki lost the Republican primary on 4 August. USA Today repeated the same identification.

He is the son of Timothy “Timmy” Teepell, a Republican strategist who worked for Bobby Jindal and later helped elect Hawley. If a share calls the father “Tommy Teepell,” that is the wrong first name.

So “not a random concerned citizen from Caro” is fair. “Republican operative” is fair if it means a recent GOP staffer and campaign hire. It is a stretch if it means he still works for Hawley. He left that office in February.

What is not in the file

A later Guardian story found that Timmy Teepell’s firm, Breakthrough LLC, was paid $250,000 on 29 September 2026 by America Next, a 501(c)(4) that shares a Baton Rouge suite with the firm. The FEC independent-expenditure schedule lists the purpose as “CANVASSING AND INFLUENCER MARKETING” in opposition to Abdul El-Sayed. That filing is real.

The Guardian also wrote: nothing in the filings shows Thomas Teepell was paid by Breakthrough or America Next. America Next, Hawley’s office, and both Teepells did not answer the paper’s requests for comment. A group-chat offer, reported by the Michigan Daily, to pay College Republicans $200 to boo El-Sayed was for a Flint town hall two weeks earlier, not for Caro. Those messages do not name Teepell.

Family money and a dual-loyalty question in a small room are a reason to be suspicious. They are not a receipt. “Plant” and “they sent him” stay unproven until someone produces an assignment, a payment, or an admission.

How to read the next one

A first name only, at a campaign event, is a prompt to look the person up — not proof of a plot by itself.

Staff directories and FEC Form 5 filings are primary. Viral captions are not.

Keep the son’s résumé and the father’s invoice on separate lines. One can be true while the other does not pay for the night.

“Will you disavow X because you are Muslim?” is a dual-loyalty question. You can say that without inventing a payroll.

Same rules, every side

Campaigns on the left also seed questions and film the reply. The test does not change: name the person from a checkable record, then prove the payment if you claim one. A Hawley résumé is a record. A $250,000 invoice to the father is a record. A Caro stipend is not yet either.

Evidence

Piece

Status

Why

A man calling himself Tommy asked El-Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood in Caro on 17 Oct 2026

True

Event video; CBS Detroit; Washington Post; USA Today

El-Sayed said yes, then turned the question into a dual-loyalty / Constitution exchange

True

Same video and contemporaneous reports

Tommy is Thomas Teepell

True

Handbasket first ID; Guardian and USA Today independently

He was a Hawley intern, then operations director, left Feb 2026

True

Guardian citing LegiStorm staff records

He was political director for Philip Sarnecki’s Kansas campaign

True

Guardian; Handbasket; Sarnecki lost the 4 Aug primary

He is the son of GOP strategist Timmy / Timothy Teepell (Jindal, Hawley)

True

Guardian; Handbasket; OnMessage biography

He was a random local with no political job history

False

Staff and campaign record

He still works in Hawley’s office

False

Left February 2026

He was paid, or assigned, to ask the Caro question

Unproven

Guardian: no filing shows a payment to the son

America Next paid Breakthrough LLC $250,000 to oppose El-Sayed

True

FEC Form 5, 29 Sept 2026

That invoice proves the Caro heckle was purchased

Incomplete

It names the father’s firm and a purpose, not the son or that night

Sources

Claim: Reich Wing Watch Facebook post, share/p/19kFi7wz7L, captured 24 Oct 2026.

CBS Detroit, 19 Oct 2026: Caro exchange, quotes, crowd.

Washington Post, 18 Oct 2026: same event.

USA Today, 19 Oct 2026: identification as a former Hawley aide.

Marisa Kabas, The Handbasket, 18 Oct 2026: first public ID as Thomas Teepell.

Joseph Gedeon, The Guardian, 19 Oct 2026: LegiStorm career line; Timmy Teepell.

Jason Wilson, The Guardian, 20 Oct 2026: Breakthrough payment; no filing for the son.

FEC, America Next Inc. independent expenditure, report C90015439 / 2015943: $250,000 to Breakthrough LLC, 29 Sept 2026, opposing El-Sayed.

Mostly true: “Tommy” is Thomas Teepell, a former Josh Hawley aide.
