We like to be right. That preference can become confirmation bias<\/strong>: the habit of seeking, interpreting, and remembering information that supports what we already believe, while brushing off what does not.<\/p>\n

What it looks like in practice<\/h2>\n

Selective exposure.<\/strong> People gravitate to outlets that sound like them. Over time the feed becomes a hall of mirrors.<\/p>\n

Interpretation bias.<\/strong> The same jobs report can look like proof of success to one reader and proof of failure to another, depending on prior beliefs.<\/p>\n

Memory bias.<\/strong> Supporting facts stick. Contradicting facts fade. The result is a worldview that feels more certain than the evidence warrants.<\/p>\n

A simple example<\/h2>\n

Two readers can look at the same climate study. One highlights the urgent findings. The other highlights uncertainty. Both are looking at the data. Bias decides which parts feel \u201creal.\u201d<\/p>\n

How to loosen its grip<\/h2>\n

  1. Actively read sources you do not already like.<\/li>\n
  2. When a story makes you feel validated, ask whether you accept it because it is true or because you want it to be true.<\/li>\n
  3. Steel-man the other side. Take the strongest version of the opposing argument, not the weakest.<\/li>\n
  4. Separate facts from the story wrapped around them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
