Disagreement is easy to skip. The machine learns to serve more of the same.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friends and follows.<\/strong> We connect with people like us. Their shares become our news diet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engagement.<\/strong> Outrage travels. Careful, qualified reporting often does not. Feeds fill with heat because heat performs.<\/p>\n<h2>Why it matters<\/h2>\n<p>Echo chambers sharpen polarization. They create a false sense that \u201ceveryone\u201d agrees with you. They make the other side easier to caricature. And they are excellent at spreading claims that feel true to the group, even when they are not.<\/p>\n<h2>How to get some air<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow a few serious journalists and outlets outside your usual camp.<\/li>\n<li>When you disagree, try to understand the argument before you rebut it.<\/li>\n<li>Use chronological feeds when the platform offers them.<\/li>\n<li>Step away. A feed is not a census of reality.<\/li>\n<li>Read longer work \u2014 reporting, papers, books \u2014 not only posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The aim is not to abandon your values.
