The board lists the lawful reasons:

Retrievable ballots. On mail and early (one-stop) ballots, workers may add a unique number so a ballot can be pulled if a voter dies before Election Day, is successfully challenged, or is found to have voted twice. That is N.C.G.S. § 163-166.45.

Precinct sorting. Early voters may use any site in the county. Workers may write the precinct so ballots can be sorted for reporting under N.C.G.S. § 163-132.5G.

Provisional and absentee flags. In most counties a “P” or “A” in the upper-left box marks ballots that must stay in envelopes until the county board approves them — the opposite of a secret discard.

Election Day ballots are not retrievable. Workers may still write a precinct name for sorting, or a note on a provisional ballot. Stray marks, the board says, do not stop a count unless they hit the timing bars in the margin or the ovals the scanner reads.

Mail ballots, not the viral claim. Used here only as a process illustration; it does not show a North Carolina precinct notation.

This is not only a North Carolina story

PolitiFact rated the 2026 posts False and noted similar warnings from elections officials in Illinois, Tennessee, Florida and New Mexico. It had rated the identical script False in October 2024 and, for Texas, in October 2020. In Texas, poll workers are required to sign or stamp the back of the ballot to authenticate it.

Snopes (2024) heard the same from Massachusetts, Maryland and Maine: a mark does not auto-reject the ballot. AFP (2024) added the useful split: some states require initials (Minnesota, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri examples); others tell workers not to write except to spoil a damaged ballot. Neither version matches “any writing voids your vote.”

The honest limit: election law is state law. A viral paragraph cannot describe 50 codes. If a scanner rejects a ballot because ink sits on a timing mark, you are usually offered a replacement while you are still there. That is a machine-readability problem, not a secret partisan kill switch. Check your county board, not a screenshot.

How to check the next one

Search the claim plus your state’s elections board. North Carolina’s mythbuster archive is public: ncsbe.gov.

Ask whether the post cites a statute. This one never does. The real NC statutes cut the other way.

If a worker marks your ballot, you can ask why. “Precinct,” “OS number,” “P,” “A,” or a required signature are ordinary answers.

Do not spoil a ballot on the strength of a meme. A replacement ballot is for a real error, not for a rumor.

Same rules, every side

This rumor does not belong to one party. It spreads as “they are marking our ballots” in different counties in different years. Treating poll workers as the fraud is the rot.
