Our reading:<\/strong> False. The 20 October 2026 videos do not show James Talarico\u2019s former student accusing him of sexual assault. Fact-checkers and researchers say they are AI impersonations in the Storm-1516 pattern. The real man whose name and photos were stolen told a reporter the clips are not him.<\/p>\n

The claim in the wild<\/h2>\n

A newly created X account using the name Zyon Lewis posted two face-to-camera videos. The caption, as archived by Lead Stories<\/a> and AFP<\/a>, alleged sexual assault by Talarico in 2012 at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio, when the speaker said he was 12. The account was created in September 2026. NewsGuard<\/a> reported X listed Romania as the signup country. X later suspended it. Other accounts kept sharing the files.<\/p>\n

Talarico, a Texas Democrat running for U.S. Senate, did teach language arts at Jeremiah Rhodes Middle School from 2011 to 2013, through Teach For America. That biographical fact is what the smear needed. It is not corroboration of the video.<\/p>\n

The named student says it is not him<\/h2>\n

There is a real Zyon Lewis from the San Antonio area who attended Rhodes Middle School. Researchers say the X account lifted his name and Facebook pictures. His public Facebook posts, quoted by AFP and Graphika, praise Talarico \u2014 including in February 2026: he felt \u201chonored and proud\u201d to have been taught by him.<\/p>\n

Ed Payne of Lead Stories reached Lewis by phone on 21 October 2026:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve looked at it, and it\u2019s not me. The video is very much AI, very bad AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Asked whether Talarico had ever sexually abused him, Lewis said: \u201cNo, not at all. Not even close\u2026 He was a great teacher. Never messed with me. Never was weird any kind of way towards me or any other student that I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d He said someone had taken \u201cpictures and posts\u201d from his Facebook and made an AI video.<\/p>\n

AFP compared the man on camera with Lewis\u2019s photos: different complexion and teeth, a non-Texas accent, and British spelling (\u201cbehaviour\u201d) on screen. San Antonio police told AFP they have no matching report. The school closed earlier in 2026. We are not republishing Lewis\u2019s Facebook pictures; AFP\u2019s side-by-side<\/a> is the comparison to use.<\/p>\n

Who seeded it<\/h2>\n

Graphika (21 Oct)<\/a> assessed \u201cwith high confidence\u201d that Storm-1516 produced the videos and that they are \u201cvery likely deepfakes,\u201d based on the amplifier network and the content. Known Storm-1516 accounts shared them. SGAnon, a high-follower amplifier, posted then deleted, saying a \u201cvideo analysis\u201d showed the files were \u201cartificially generated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Darren Linvill, co-director of Clemson University\u2019s Media Forensics Hub \u2014 the team that first mapped Storm-1516 \u2014 told AFP there was \u201calmost no question this is Storm.\u201d Joseph Bodnar of the Institute for Strategic Dialogue said the narrative, format and distribution matched the operation, including a 2024 sexual-assault smear against then\u2013vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz that used a paid West African actor. PolitiFact rated the Talarico claim Pants on Fire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Campaign comment is not evidence. Talarico spokesman JT Ennis told PolitiFact the videos were slander via \u201cAI deepfakes, foreign bots, and conspiracy theories.\u201d Treat that as an interested party. The load-bearing facts are Lewis\u2019s interview, the stolen-account trail, the amplifier map, and the IFCN write-ups.<\/p>\n

How to check the next one<\/h2>\n

  1. If an abuse clip names a private person, look for that person confirming it on a long-standing account, to a reporter, or to police. A brand-new profile with stolen photos is the tell.<\/li>\n
  2. Watch the face and the room: still torso, mismatched mouth, dead blink.<\/li>\n
  3. Search the first poster plus \u201cStorm-1516.\u201d These operations reuse amplifiers.<\/li>\n
  4. Do not treat Hive, SynthID or a chatbot as proof.<\/li>\n
  5. Do not quote a graphic abuse script involving a child to \u201craise awareness.\u201d Describe the claim, show it is fabricated, stop.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Same rules, every side<\/h2>\n

    Storm-1516\u2019s 2024 Walz smear was also aimed at a Democrat. The method \u2014 a sexual-assault deepfake of a named private person, launched from a disposable account \u2014 can be pointed at anyone. A campaign denial is not a fact-check. If the named student, the police record, and the researchers disagree with the video, the video loses.<\/p>\n
